My name is Val and in keeping with my lifestyle, my photography aims to be informal and relaxed. Various experiences in my life have led me to have an eclectic focus- even in the portraiture that I pursue now.
In taking portraits I strive to reveal the unique emotions of the individual. Timing and mood always conspire to produce unique conditions, so that in everything I photograph, I am always attempting to capture the spirit of the moment and my subject.
Nature has always been my primary inspiration. Growing up in the Catskill Mountains of NY, and being surrounded by the woods fed my love for the outdoors. My favorite backdrop is the Earth and the best lighting is the Sun.
Graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a BFA in photography exposed me to city life and the art world. My work has been shown at galleries in Manhattan, Baltimore, MD, Albany, NY and St. Johnsbury, VT. I have been a freelance photographer since 1998. Jobs ranged from archiving photographs at the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury, VT to photographing Bar Mitzvahs. The wonderful community and beautiful outdoors drew me to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont where I started my photography business in 2006.
